Den här klassen skyddar lagrade data från visning och manipulering. Åtkomsten till skyddade data erhålls genom att skapa en instans av den här klassen och använda de exakta syftessträngar som användes för att skydda data. Anroparen behöver ingen nyckel för att antingen skydda eller ta bort skyddet av data. Nyckeln tillhandahålls av krypteringsalgoritmen.
Härledda klasser måste åsidosätta metoderna ProviderProtect och Unprotect som basklassen DataProtector anropar tillbaka till. De måste också åsidosätta IsReprotectRequired metoden, som alltid kan returneras true med en potentiell liten effektivitetsförlust när program uppdaterar sin databas med lagrad chiffertext.
