Understand customer account verification in Partner Center

Appropriate roles: Admin agent | Sales agent

When you add a new customer or update an existing customer's account information in Partner Center, Microsoft runs a compliance verification to confirm the accuracy and legitimacy of the account details. During this process, the customer account status shows as Under review.

This article explains what the verification process means, what to expect, and what steps you can take.

What is customer account verification?

Customer account verification is a compliance check that Microsoft performs to verify the business information associated with a customer account. This process helps protect the CSP ecosystem by ensuring that customer accounts meet Microsoft's requirements.

Verification is triggered when:

  • A new customer account is created in Partner Center.
  • Billing information is updated on an existing customer account (for example, company name, address, or organization details).
  • Organization profile changes are made to a previously verified customer.

Important

Updating billing or organization details on an already-verified customer account can trigger a new verification. Ensure all customer details are accurate before submitting changes, as corrections after submission may restart the verification process.

What does "Under review" mean?

When a customer account shows Under review in the Customers workspace, it means that verification is in progress. This status is a normal part of the customer lifecycle and doesn't indicate a problem with the account.

What's blocked during verification

While a customer account is under review:

  • New subscription purchases are blocked.
  • Seat increases and upgrades aren't possible.

Note

Renewals, Seat reductions, and Cancellations of existing customer subscriptions continue to process normally and are unaffected by the verification status.

How long does verification take?

Verification time varies depending on the complexity of the review:

Scenario Typical duration
Standard verification for a new customer 1–3 business days
Reverification after an account update 1–3 business days
Complex cases requiring additional review Up to 5–10 business days

Most accounts are verified within three business days. In rare cases, verification might take longer if additional review of the business information is needed.

Tip

If verification is taking longer than expected, double-check the customer profile data you entered — especially the first name, last name, company name, address, and registration ID/number (if applicable). Inaccurate or mismatched details are a common cause of extended reviews. Correcting any mistakes early can help avoid further delays.

Best practices to speed up verification

Follow these guidelines to help ensure a smooth, fast verification process:

  • Enter the customer's exact legal name as it appears on official business registration documents.
  • Avoid using personal names as the company name.
  • Avoid names that are primarily numeric (for example, Contoso Ltd rather than 12345 LLC).
  • Don't use abbreviations or informal names.

Provide complete and accurate information

  • Double-check all address fields before submitting (street, city, state/province, postal code, country/region).
  • Ensure the phone number is valid and formatted correctly for the customer's country/region.
  • Verify that the company registration ID (if required for the country/region) is correct.

Finalize details before submission

  • Verify all customer information before creating the account or saving changes.
  • Making corrections after submission might restart the verification process.

Check the status of verification

To check whether a customer account is still under review:

  1. Sign in to Partner Center and select Customers.
  2. Select the customer from the list.
  3. On the customer's Account page, check the account status.

If the status shows Under review, the verification is still in progress.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my customer's account go back to "under review" after it was already approved?

Updating billing information, company name, or address on a previously verified account triggers a new verification. To learn more, see the note in What is customer account verification?.

Does the customer's business name affect how long verification takes?

Yes. Accounts with clear, recognizable business names that match official registration documents are typically verified faster. For naming guidelines, see Use the registered legal business name.

Can I still manage existing subscriptions during verification?

Existing subscription renewals, seat reductions, and cancellations continue normally. However, new purchases, seat increases, and upgrades are blocked until verification completes. For details, see What's blocked during verification.

My customer's account has been under review for more than a week. What should I do?

While most verifications complete within three business days, some accounts require additional review — often due to inaccurate customer profile data entered during account creation. If the verification has been in progress for more than five business days, review the customer's profile for accuracy — check the company name, address, name, and registration ID against official business documents.
