Follow these steps to resolve the activation issue and the problem where Word opens but does not allow typing:
- Confirm the correct product key is being used
- Make sure the key in Notepad is specifically for the version of Office/Word installed.
- Do not use:
- A Windows product key from a sticker on the PC.
- A key from an older Office version (for example, Office 2010) for a newer Office.
- A key from a single program (Word only) to activate an Office suite, or vice versa.
- A volume license key provided by a school or company for a retail/home version.
- Office product keys are not interchangeable between versions or between suites and individual apps.
- Check for typing mistakes when entering the key
- When entering the key, carefully check these commonly confused characters:
- B and 8
- G and 6
- O and 0
- Q and 0
- VV (two V’s) and W
- If the key came in an email from an online purchase, copy and paste it instead of typing.
- Try activating again inside Word
- Open Word.
- Go to File → Account (or Help in older versions).
- Look for an option such as Change Product Key or Activate Product.
- Enter the 25-character product key again, checking for the character issues above.
- If Word opens but won’t let typing
- This usually means Office is not activated or is in reduced functionality mode.
- After entering a valid product key and completing activation, restart Word and test typing again.
- If the product key is reported as not valid or blocked
- If an error appears such as “product key is not valid” or activation fails and the key has been blocked, the key may be stolen, fraudulently obtained, or otherwise unauthorized.
- In that case, contact the seller and request a refund. Keys sold separately at a discount by third parties are often not genuine or are volume licenses not meant for home users.
- If the key still does not work
- If the key continues to fail after confirming it is the correct key and correctly typed, and activation still does not complete, the only supported options are:
- Work with the original seller for a replacement or refund.
- Purchase a new, genuine Microsoft 365 or Office license from the Microsoft Store or another trusted retailer.
These steps address both the activation failure and the “can’t type in Word” symptom, which is typically caused by Office not being properly activated.
