I can't add folders to my quick access in explorer. I've tried the 3 DOS commands and clearing cache. That hasn't helped.

    Hi FCC LWard,

Let me walk you through a few things that may help.

First, Quick Access relies on a hidden cache and permissions in the user profile. Since you’ve already tried clearing the cache and running commands, the next step is to check whether your user profile has the correct permissions. Sometimes, corruption in the automaticDestinations-ms files can block new folders from being pinned. Deleting those files from the AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations folder and restarting Explorer often resolves the issue.

Another thing to confirm is that you’re not in a restricted environment, Group Policy or registry settings can disable pinning to Quick Access. If this is a work device, your IT administrator may have enforced such policies. On personal devices, you can check by opening Local Group Policy Editor and ensuring “Do not allow pinning items in Quick Access” is not enabled.

If the issue persists, try creating a new Windows user profile temporarily. If Quick Access works there, it confirms the original profile is corrupted and may need repair. Also, make sure you’re running the latest cumulative updates for Windows 11, as Explorer fixes are often included.

You can try the above suggestions and let me know the outcome. If this answer helps clarify the situation, I’d appreciate it if you could click “Accept Answer” so others with the same issue can find the solution.

    Jason.

In File Explorer, Quick access only accepts folders that Windows can access and that are not blocked by privacy settings. Use these checks and steps:

    1. Try pinning a known local folder
      • Open File Explorer.
      • Browse to a simple local folder such as C:\Users\<user>\Documents.
      • Right‑click the folder and select Pin to Quick access.
      • If this works, the issue may be with the specific folder (permissions, network path, or location) rather than Quick access itself.
    2. Confirm Quick access is visible and working
      • In Windows 10:
        • Open File Explorer.
        • On the View tab, select Navigation pane and ensure it is enabled.
        • Right‑click any folder and check that Pin to Quick access appears and is not greyed out.
      • In Windows 11:
        • Open File Explorer.
        • Select View > Show > Navigation Pane and ensure it is turned on.
        • Right‑click a folder and choose Pin to Quick access.
    3. Reset Quick access privacy items (Windows 10)
      • Open File Explorer.
      • Go to the View tab and select Options.
      • In the Privacy section, clear both check boxes (recent files and frequent folders) and select Apply.
      • Close File Explorer completely, reopen it, then try pinning a folder again.
      • If desired, re‑enable the privacy check boxes afterward.
    4. Check Quick access behavior (Windows 11)
      • Open File Explorer.
      • Confirm that Home shows Quick access with the default known folders (Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Music, Videos).
      • If any of these were unpinned and Quick access seems broken, restore them:
        1. Select Start > File Explorer.
        2. Select Home in the left navigation pane.
        3. Select the Up arrow to show all 6 known folders.
        4. Right‑click each folder and select Pin to Quick access.
      • After restoring these, try pinning the desired folder again.
    5. Verify the navigation pane is not hidden (Windows 11)
      • If the left pane is hidden, Quick access will not be visible:
        1. Select Start > File Explorer.
        2. Select View from the command bar.
        3. Select Show, then Navigation Pane.
      • Once visible, try pinning folders again.

If none of the above works for any folder (including simple local folders), the issue is likely outside the behaviors covered here and may require additional system‑level troubleshooting.
