Dear Microsoft Team,

Nice to contact you via Email.

Our one amplifier support USB,  and we also want to support USB NTFS and exFAT file system, is there any royalty fee for them?

    Hi Serena Nai,

To clarify, NTFS is a proprietary file system developed by Microsoft. Licensing NTFS for use in embedded devices or third-party products typically requires a commercial agreement with Microsoft, and royalties may apply depending on the scope of usage. For exFAT, Microsoft has made the specification available and has entered into agreements with organizations like the SD Association to broaden adoption. In many cases, exFAT can be implemented under a licensing arrangement, but it is not entirely royalty-free for commercial products.

In practice, if your amplifier is intended for consumer or commercial distribution, you should plan to engage with Microsoft’s licensing team to confirm the exact terms for NTFS and exFAT. The requirements can vary depending on whether the product is mass-produced, the regions it will be sold in, and whether you are already part of a licensing program.

For development and testing purposes, you can use these file systems freely on Windows devices, but embedding them into hardware for resale is where licensing obligations come into play. I recommend contacting Microsoft’s intellectual property and licensing division to get a definitive answer tailored to your business case.

I hope the response provided some helpful insight. If it clarified the issue for you, please consider marking it as Accept Answer so others with the same issue can find the solution. Feel free to reply if you need further information.

    Jason.
