Microsoft Office 2024 installation keeps asking for 365 license

If you're seeing this when trying to install Office 2024, you're on the right track :

Once done, launch any Office app, and make sure you're signed into your Microsoft account : you can do so by clicking on the "Sign in" icon in the top-left corner of any Office app. Once signed in, the license should be applied to your Office installation. (if you see a pop-up asking you to log into Microsoft 365, close it. You need to reach the "sign-in" button in the top-left corner of any Office app)

I have removed all existing licenses for Microsoft on my Mac Mini using the license removal tool.

When I go to install Microsoft Office 2024 (from "Products I have purchased" under Subscriptions on Microsoft account), the pop up says this -- before I proceed, why is it saying "When you install Microsoft 365" when I am installing ONLY OFFICE 2024???

Office 2024 is still seeing remnants of the old Microsoft 365 licensing on the Mac and is trying to activate against that instead of the new standalone license. The license must be fully removed and then Office reactivated with the correct account/license.

Follow these steps on the Mac Mini:

1. Remove all existing Office for Mac license files
   1. Download and run the official Office license removal tool for Mac: Download the license removal tool.
   2. Open the downloaded .pkg file from Finder > Downloads.
      • If macOS shows an “unidentified developer” error, hold Control and click the file, then choose Open.
   3. Select Continue and follow the prompts in the setup wizard.
   4. When prompted, select Install to complete license removal (enter the Mac admin password if asked).
   5. After the tool reports success, select Close.
   This step completely removes all Microsoft 365/Office for Mac license files so Office 2024 will no longer try to use the old 365 subscription.
2. Reinstall Office 2024 for Mac (if needed)
   • If Office apps were removed, reinstall Office 2024 using the official installer for Mac:
     1. Download Office 2024 for Mac from the account or source where it was purchased.
     2. Open Finder > Downloads and double‑click Microsoft Office installer.pkg.
     3. Select Continue, review and Agree to the license agreement.
     4. Choose how to install (or use Customize to select specific apps), then select Install.
     5. Enter the Mac login password when prompted and complete the installation.
3. Activate with the correct Office 2024 license
   1. Open any Office app (for example, Word).
   2. When prompted to sign in or activate, use the email/account associated with the Office 2024 purchase (not the old work/school Microsoft 365 account that was deactivated).
   3. If the account has both a Microsoft 365 license and a one‑time purchase, choose the one‑time purchase/Office 2024 license when prompted. The guidance is to always choose the Microsoft 365 for Mac license if available, but in this scenario the goal is to use the standalone license associated with the purchase.
   4. After successful activation, restart the Mac.

After these steps, Office 2024 should open without asking for a Microsoft 365 subscription.
