On the formulas menu at the top of Excel, in the Calculation section, is the Calculation Options drop-down menu set to Automatic, if so, it is very unusual if your workbook is not calculating automatically.

For manual calculation, in that Calculation section, there should be a 'Calculate Now' button or you can press F9 or Shift + F9 to perform a manual calculation on the sheet or full workbook.

To control when Excel recalculates, change the workbook’s calculation mode.

Turn automatic calculation back on (so formulas always recalc):

    1. Select File > Options.
    2. Select the Formulas category.
    3. In Calculation options under Workbook Calculation, select Automatic.
      • This recalculates all dependent formulas every time a value, formula, or name changes.

Use manual calculation (so it only recalculates when requested):

    1. Select File > Options.
    2. Select the Formulas category.
    3. In Calculation options under Workbook Calculation, select Manual.
      • When set to Manual, Excel only recalculates when requested.

Buttons/commands to recalculate in Manual mode:

    • To recalculate all open workbooks: on the Formulas tab, in the Calculation group, select Calculate Now (or press F9).
    • To recalculate only the active sheet: on the Formulas tab, in the Calculation group, select Calculate Sheet.

Note: Changing these options affects all open workbooks.
