I cannot get Outlook to work with Yahoo email on my Windows 11 laptop. I have changed my password for my Outlook running on my iPhone and Outlook works just fine on my iPhone. When try to use the same password and previous settings on Outlook running on Windows 11, it does not work.

My incoming mail is configured as follows:
Server: imap.mail.yahoo.com
Port 993
Encryption method SSL/TLS

My outgoing mail is configured as follows:
Server: smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Port 465
Encryption method SSL/TLS

The response I receive is "Something went wrong. Something went wrong, and Outlook couldn't save your account settings. Please try again," and then I retry, I get the same results. When I run it within Outlook when sending to Yaho it says via the progress indicators that it was "Complete,d" but when it "Synchronizing subscribed folders for my email account, the progress indicators says "Errors." Here is a description of the synchronization error:

Task 'Synchronizing subscribed folders for [PII removed]@bellsouth.net.' reported error (0x800CCC0E) : 'Outlook cannot synchronize subscribed folders for [PII removed]@bellsouth.net. Error: Cannot connect to the server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

Hello Flack, Charles, thank you for posting to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand how confusing it can be when your email works perfectly on your phone but refuses to connect on your Windows laptop, despite using the exact same settings.

The synchronization error you are seeing (0x800CCC0E) is a mismatch caused by the password authentication method. The reason your account works seamlessly on your iPhone is that the iOS Mail app or Outlook mobile app automatically uses Modern Authentication (OAuth2) to connect. However, classic Outlook on Windows handles this differently and requires you to generate a unique "App Password" specifically for the desktop application.

Here is how to resolve this:

    • Step 1: Generate an App Password. Please log into your Yahoo or AT&T account through a web browser. Navigate to your Account Security settings and find the option for "Manage app passwords" or "Generate app password." Select "Outlook desktop" from the drop-down menu to generate a one-time, 16-character password.
    • Step 2: Update Outlook on Windows 11. Go back to your manual IMAP setup in Outlook on Windows 11. Your server and port settings (IMAP 993, SMTP 465) are exactly right. However, instead of typing your standard Yahoo/AT&T password, you must paste that newly generated 16-character App Password into the password field.

I hope these steps help you bypass the sync error and get your Bellsouth account properly connected to your laptop.

The instructions are too general and not specific enough. There are no errors in Sendings on Calendar Synchronization. Getting an Error on Synchronizing subscribed folders.

Error 0x800CCC0E indicates Outlook cannot connect to the IMAP/SMTP servers, even though the server names and ports appear correct. The issue is typically with authentication or detailed account settings rather than the basic server/port values.

Use these steps in classic Outlook for Windows 11 to correct the configuration:

    1. Open the detailed account settings
      1. Open Control Panel in Windows.
      2. Search for and open Mail.
      3. In Mail Setup - Outlook, select Email Accounts.
      4. Select the Yahoo/AT&T (bellsouth.net) account and choose Change.
    2. Verify basic server and logon information
      1. Confirm the Incoming mail server and Outgoing mail server match the values provided by the email provider. If needed, compare with the provider’s documentation or the values in the POP and IMAP email settings for Outlook reference.
      2. Under Logon Information, confirm the correct User Name (full email address) and Password are entered. If the provider uses two-factor authentication, an app-specific password may be required instead of the normal account password.
    3. Check advanced and authentication settings
      1. Select More Settings.
      2. On the Advanced tab:
        • Confirm Incoming server (IMAP) and Outgoing server (SMTP) port numbers match the provider’s required values.
        • Confirm the Use the following type of encrypted connection options for both incoming and outgoing servers match the provider’s requirements (for example, SSL/TLS vs STARTTLS). If they do not match, change them to the correct values.
      3. On the Outgoing Server tab, ensure the correct authentication option is selected according to the provider’s instructions. Many providers require “My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication” and often “Use same settings as my incoming mail server.” If the provider requires “Log on to incoming server before sending mail,” enable that option.
    4. Test the account from Control Panel
      1. After updating settings, select OK to close More Settings.
      2. In the Change Account window, select Test Account Settings.
      3. If red markers appear, one or more settings are still incorrect; recheck server names, ports, encryption type, and authentication options against the provider’s documentation. If tests succeed (green check marks), select Next and Finish.

If the error persists after confirming all values against the provider’s documented IMAP/SMTP settings, contact the email provider or ISP to verify whether additional requirements (such as app passwords, security changes, or specific ports/encryption combinations) are needed for Outlook on Windows.
