I keep getting this error code when trying to log in to a shared onedrive area created by someone outside my organisation:

Based on the Correlation ID and the URL (onedrive.live.com) provided, this error typically occurs when there is an authentication mismatch between your local organizational credentials and the Guest Access token provided by the external organization.

Here are a few steps you can try:

    1. Use InPrivate/Incognito Browsing or Clear Cache
    • Try clearing your browser cache/cookies or try signing in using an InPrivate/Incognito window to see if it helps fix the issue.
    1. Verify Account Type

The URL in your log mentions onedrive.live.com. This often indicates a redirect to a Personal Microsoft Account interface.

    • If the sender shared the folder from a OneDrive for Business (Work/School) account, the URL should typically look like https://[orgname]-my.sharepoint.com.
    • Ensure you are not accidentally signed into a personal Outlook/Hotmail account in the same browser session.
    1. Ask the owner to re‑share the folder
    • If the issue persists:
    • Ask the owner to remove your access
    • Re‑share the folder again
    • Ideally use “Specific people” and your exact email address

Hopefully it will help work with your issue and if you have any other questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask.

The error message and correlation ID shown on the OneDrive sign-in page indicate a transient or service-side sign-in problem rather than a client-side configuration issue. The context provided only covers specific OneDrive sign-in error codes (0x8004de40, 0x8004de88, 0x8004de85, 0x8004de8a, 0x8004dec5), which do not match the message shown in this scenario, so only general guidance from similar cases can be applied.

    Based on the referenced cases:

    1. If the issue is intermittent, wait and try again later
      • In one similar sign-in case, the problem resolved on its own without any client-side changes.
      • Because the message explicitly says “We’re on it! Please try again later,” this can indicate a temporary backend issue.
    2. If the issue persists, contact Microsoft support with the correlation ID
      • The correlation ID, timestamp, and URL are specifically intended for Microsoft support to trace the failing request.
      • For tenant or account-level sign-in issues that do not resolve on their own, escalation through Microsoft support is required, as shown in the referenced Q&A cases where only Microsoft could fix the underlying problem.
    3. If this is the only affected account or tenant
      • Similar to the referenced situations where only one account was affected and others worked, this can point to an account-specific backend problem that must be corrected by Microsoft.

Because the context does not provide a documented client-side fix for this exact “Something went wrong” message with correlation ID, the supported actions are:

    • Retry after some time.
    • If it continues, open a support ticket with Microsoft (or via the organization’s Microsoft 365 admin) and include:
      • Correlation ID
      • Date and time
      • URL (onedrive.live.com)
      • Description that this occurs when accessing a shared OneDrive area from an external organization.
