    Right-click the Speaker icon.

    Click Sound settings.

Scroll down → click More sound settings.

    Go to the Recording tab.

    Double-click your Microphone.

    Open the Listen tab.

Uncheck → “Listen to this device.”

    Click Apply → OK.

The microphone sound being played back in the ears is usually caused by “mic monitoring”/“listen to this device” or similar input monitoring being enabled. On a Surface Laptop with Windows, this can be changed in the sound settings.

    Try these steps:

    1. Open Sound settings:
      • Select Start > Settings > System > Sound.
    2. Make sure the correct input device is selected:
      • Under Input > Choose a device for speaking or recording, select the built‑in or external mic that is being used.
    3. Open the classic Sound control panel (if available on the device):
      • In Sound settings, select Sound control panel (under Advanced or More sound settings).
      • Go to the Recording tab.
      • Select the active microphone and choose Properties.
    4. Check for monitoring/listen options:
      • Look for a Listen tab and make sure Listen to this device is not selected.
      • Apply/OK to save changes.
    5. Adjust microphone levels if needed:
      • In the same Properties window, on the Levels tab, adjust Microphone (and Microphone Boost if present) so input is at a comfortable level without feedback.
    6. If using any audio enhancement or communications apps (for example, voice‑processing, gaming, or conferencing software), open their audio settings and disable any “mic monitoring,” “sidetone,” or “hear myself” options.

If the issue started recently and persists, also try turning off any special Audio enhancements for the input device in Sound settings and test again.
