How do I upgrade my MS 365 Personal to have Teams Premium

Teams Premium is a business-class add-on that requires a "Teams for Business" underlying license. Below are the steps and options available to you if you would like to access these features: 

Step 1: Switch to a Business Subscription 

To use Teams Premium, you must first have a Microsoft 365 Business or Enterprise subscription (such as Business Basic, Standard, or Premium). 

You can "upgrade" your personal account by purchasing a business plan. Microsoft allows you to convert your remaining personal subscription time into the new business subscription during the setup process.

Step 2: Purchase Teams Premium as an Add-on 

Once you have a business subscription, you can then purchase the Teams Premium add-on license. This provides features like: Intelligent meeting recaps (AI-generated notes and tasks), Live translation for captions during meetings, Advanced meeting protection (watermarking and sensitivity labels), Branded meeting experiences. 

1. Sign in to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center with a global or billing admin account.
   • Go to Billing > Purchase services.
   • Under “Add-ons,” find Microsoft Teams Premium and click Buy now (or Try/Buy).
   • Complete the checkout.
2. Assign the Teams Premium license
   • After purchase, go to Users > Active users, select the user(s) you want to upgrade.
   • Click Licenses and Apps, check the Teams Premium box, and save.
3. (Optional) If you already have a commercial subscription and just need to add seats:
   • In Admin Center > Billing > Your products, select your subscription and click Add licenses.
   • You can also redeem a product key under Redeem product key if you got one from a CSP/partner.

I recommend starting with a trial of Microsoft 365 Business Standard to see if the business environment meets your needs before adding the Premium license.

Teams Premium is an add-on license that must be purchased in addition to an existing Microsoft 365/Office 365 subscription and Teams license.

To upgrade a Microsoft 365 Personal setup to include Teams Premium features:

1. Ensure the Microsoft account/tenant already has:
   • An eligible Microsoft 365 or Office 365 subscription, and
   • A Teams license assigned.
2. Purchase Teams Premium licenses through an available Microsoft purchasing channel (for example, Web Direct or other listed channels) for the same tenant where the Microsoft 365 Personal subscription and Teams license exist.
3. Assign the Teams Premium license to the user account that already has the standard Teams license. Teams Premium does not replace the existing Teams license; both must be assigned for Teams Premium features to work.

Once assigned, the account will have access to the additional Teams Premium capabilities on top of the existing Microsoft 365 Personal and Teams features.
