Licence reallocation

The Windows Server 2022 Standard cannot be used because it was already activated on a virtual machine. However, that virtual machine is now totally damaged. Because of that, the license cannot be deactivated and reused for the new Windows Server 2022. We need assistance with license reallocation.

As far as I know, Windows Server licenses are designed to be activated on one system at a time, so when the VM was destroyed, the activation record remained associated with that hardware profile. That’s why you’re seeing the error when trying to activate on a new installation.
The recommended path forward is to contact Microsoft Support or your Volume Licensing Service Center (if applicable) to request a license reallocation. They can validate that the original activation is no longer in use and help reset the activation count so you can apply the license to your new Windows Server 2022 installation. If you are using a retail license, you may also try re‑activating online or through the activation troubleshooter, but in most cases involving damaged VMs, support intervention is required.
It’s important to provide details such as your license key, proof of purchase, and the context that the VM is no longer recoverable. This will help Microsoft Support process the reallocation quickly. Once the license is reset, you’ll be able to activate the new server without issue.
