To move from classic Microsoft Teams to the new (latest) Teams, follow the appropriate path for the scenario.
1. If using the classic Teams client with a paid Microsoft 365/Teams license
Classic Teams is retired and replaced by the new Teams client:
- Install or switch to new Teams on supported devices.
- If the classic client no longer launches or shows end-of-availability messages, use the new Teams web app in a supported browser instead. See the system requirements at supported browsers.
- If classic Teams was blocked from updating by OS or organization policy, update the OS or contact the IT admin to allow installation of new Teams.
After July 1, 2025, the classic client no longer works; all work must be done in new Teams (desktop or web).
2. If using Microsoft Teams Free (classic)
Teams Free (classic) is retired. There are two upgrade options:
Option A – Upgrade to a paid Teams plan and keep data
- Review available paid plans (for example, Microsoft 365 subscriptions or Microsoft Teams Essentials) at Learn more about licenses.
- Purchase the chosen subscription; a temporary domain such as
contoso.onmicrosoft.com is created.
- After purchase, sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin portal and update users’ usernames and reset passwords so they can sign in to the full Teams and Microsoft 365 experience.
- All teams, chats, files, and permissions from Teams Free (classic) move with the organization; there is no data loss during this upgrade.
Important constraints:
- All users in the Teams Free (classic) organization must be upgraded; mixing free and paid users in the same org is not supported.
- The Teams Free (classic) org cannot be merged into an existing Microsoft 365 paid subscription; a new subscription is required.
- If the org has more than 300 users, an enterprise license such as Office 365 E1 is required.
If a different plan such as Office 365 Enterprise E3 is needed, first upgrade using the provided E3 upgrade path, then use the “Switch plans” option in the admin portal to move to another Microsoft 365 for business plan.
Option B – Move to the new free Teams (no data migration)
- Sign up for the new Microsoft Teams (free) experience.
- Note that data from Teams Free (classic)—including channels, chats, files, and recurring meetings—is not retained or migrated to the new free Teams.
3. Accessibility and screen reader users
For users moving from classic to new Teams who rely on screen readers:
- Use the updated keyboard shortcuts and navigation guidance in the new Teams (for example, Ctrl+Period for context-sensitive help, Ctrl+6 for the OneDrive app).
- Refer to the accessibility and screen-reader-specific help for new Teams if needed.
