Hardware Issue- Buyer Beware

I purchased my Surface 7 laptop in August of 2024, before I started law school. Only to find out after the warranty expired that the Surface laptop I spent over $2,000 on for school was subject to hardware issues. Microsoft knew about this defect in its laptops and continued to sell them. Now, during midterms, I am stuck without a computer and forced to purchase a new one. This will be the first and the last surface I will ever purchase.

I should not have to pay for an issue that I did not cause. I spoke with tech support who stated because it is out of warranty, it would cost me $600.00. If they cant fix it. They will replace it with a refurbished model or similar. At that point, I can purchase a more reliable option.

For a Surface Laptop that is out of warranty and experiencing hardware issues, available options depend on current coverage and device status:

    1. If the device is out of warranty or physically damaged
      • It may be eligible for a paid out-of-warranty replacement with a refurbished device.
      • To start this process online, go to Select device for service at https://account.microsoft.com/devices/select-device-for-repair and:
        1. Sign in with the Microsoft account.
        2. Select or register the Surface Laptop.
        3. Follow the prompts to create a service order and see available out-of-warranty offers and pricing.
      • Details on this process and eligibility are described under out-of-warranty and damaged Surface service options.
    2. If Microsoft Complete or another protection plan was purchased
    3. If self-repair is preferred
      • For certain Surface devices, self-repair parts are available. Microsoft does not advise which specific part will fix a particular issue; the choice is based on service guides and diagnostics.
      • Replacement components come with their own warranty, and tools are sold separately via iFixit.
    4. If in-person help is needed
      • Authorized Service Providers (where available) can provide in-person support and out-of-warranty repair services.
      • Locations can be found via the Surface in-person support and Authorized Service Provider resources.
    5. Post-service warranty
      • For out-of-warranty paid service, the replacement or serviced device typically receives a 90‑day hardware warranty.

For any of these paths, backing up data before sending the device in is strongly recommended, as data recovery is not performed as part of service.
