Keep getting the error below when opening outlook. The gmail app shows I have new emails, but outlook isn't showing them. Shows no new emails since yesterday.

Task [PII: Removed]@gmail.com - Sending' reported error (0x80070057) : 'Sorry, something went wrong. You may want to try again.'

    I am installing Mozilla

Compatibility between outlook and gmail is always a headache. Looks like this is just on purpose.

    Dear Jill Fischer

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A forum. I understand you are having problem with Classic Outlook for Windows not syncing your Gmail account and showing: Task  – Sending’ reported error (0x80070057): Sorry, something went wrong. You may want to try again. Please follow these steps:

    • Use Microsoft’s “Retry” sign-in fix if your Outlook build supports it
      • This Gmail sign-in/permission problem is fixed starting with Current Channel Version 2412 (Build 18324.20168). On the fixed build, you can re-run the Google browser sign-in by selecting the “Retry” link shown in the Outlook error prompt, then complete the browser sign-in again.
    • If “Retry” is not available or does not resolve it: remove Google’s stored permission for “Microsoft apps & services” (then re-authenticate). Please refer to: Manage connections between your Google Account & third parties
    • Remove the existing Google permission so Outlook can request it again cleanly:
    • Close Outlook.
    • Sign in to Google (google.com) with the affected Gmail account.
    • Go to Manage your Google Account > Security > Your connections to third-party apps & services > Microsoft apps & services.
    • Select “Remove all access”, then confirm.
    • Clear the saved Google IMAP OAuth tokens from Windows Credential Manager (forces a fresh token)
      • Delete the stored OAuth credentials for the Gmail account:
      • Open Windows Credential Manager.
      • Go to Windows Credentials > Generic credentials.
      • Find entries that start with “MicrosoftOffice16_Data:OAUTH2” and include “tp_google_imap_Oauth2” (these are the Gmail OAuth credentials) and remove them.
      • Then reopen Outlook and sign in again when prompted.
    • Isolate profile corruption by creating a new Outlook profile
      • To confirm whether the issue is tied to the current Outlook profile is to create a new profile and add the Gmail account there:
      • Hold Shift while starting Outlook to open the profile picker, or run Outlook.exe /profiles, or use File > Account Settings > Change Profile.
      • Create a new profile, then add the Gmail account and test send/receive.
    • If mail is still not sending/receiving in classic Outlook after re-authentication steps, follow I can't send or receive messages in Outlook - Microsoft Support

The error and lack of new Gmail messages in classic Outlook indicate a sync/authentication problem between Outlook and Gmail.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Confirm Outlook is online and can sync
    • Make sure the PC is connected to the internet and Outlook is not in Work Offline mode.
    • In Outlook, use Send/Receive All Folders and see if the error repeats.
    • If other accounts in the same profile also fail, follow the general guidance in I can't send or receive messages in Outlook to verify connectivity and basic sync: open a browser and confirm sites like microsoft.com or bing.com load correctly.
    1. Re‑authenticate the Gmail account in classic Outlook Recent changes in Google authentication and Outlook’s sign‑in flow can cause Gmail accounts that used to work to stop syncing.
    • If an error dialog appears mentioning IMAP or Gmail permissions, and there is a Retry link, select Retry and complete the browser sign‑in.
    • During the Google sign‑in, ensure the permission is granted for:
      • “Read, compose, send, and permanently delete all your email from Gmail.”
    • If this permission was not granted previously, Outlook can no longer sync or send, which matches the behavior described.

If the Retry flow is available only on newer builds, make sure Outlook is updated to a build that includes the fix, then use the Retry option again.

    1. Check Gmail IMAP settings If Outlook reports it cannot set up or sync the Google account with IMAP, verify that IMAP is enabled in Gmail (for accounts where that control still exists):
    • In a browser, sign in to Gmail and follow Google’s guidance in Add Gmail to another email client to confirm IMAP is enabled.
    • Also verify that key folders (Inbox, Sent Mail, Trash, All Mail) are set to Show in IMAP, as Outlook needs access to these folders to sync correctly.
    1. If still failing, recreate or separate the Outlook profile If the Gmail account still will not sync or send after re‑authenticating and confirming IMAP settings:
    • Create a new Outlook profile and add only the Gmail account to test.
    • If using Google Apps Sync for Outlook together with an Exchange account in the same profile, separate them into different profiles, as this can cause send failures.

These steps address the known causes where Gmail shows new mail but classic Outlook stops updating and reports send errors.
