Outlook calendar not working in widget

For the longest time, I have used my Outlook widget to display my Outlook calendar, and this is allowed me to stay organized. However, over the last four or five days, I've noticed that the widget no longer displays my calendar, instead asks that I open the app in order to see my upcoming events. This is a seemingly small but significant change in my workflow, and I was wondering if you would have any suggestions as to how to remedy this.

A nice person on Reddit suggested I post this here for assistance.

Thank you so much and I appreciate your help in advance.

N.

p.s. I’ve deleted and redownloaded the app several times and each time I do so, the widget displays my calendar gif about 3-5 min then it stops. The device has been rebooted and updated. Just fyi

    Hi,

Thank you for sharing your question.I understand how disruptive this can be, especially when you rely on the widget to stay organized throughout the day and it suddenly stops working after years of consistent use.

Microsoft Learn reports that recent issues with the Outlook widget both on iOS and Android are often tied to app updates, system updates, or how the mobile operating system handles background refresh for widgets. In many cases, the widget stops showing calendar data and instead displays “Open Outlook app,” similar to what you're experiencing.

For iOS specifically, users have reported a compatibility glitch between the Outlook app and recent iOS versions, causing the widget to show no event data until the app is manually opened. Microsoft suggests ensuring widget permissions are granted, enabling Background App Refresh, and re‑adding the widget after restarting the device.

If you're on Android, Outlook widgets rely heavily on the device launcher and battery/background‑data settings; restrictive launchers or limited background refresh can prevent widgets from updating properly. Switching temporarily to the default launcher and ensuring Outlook has unrestricted battery and background data permissions can help.

Since you've already reinstalled the app and rebooted your device, the issue may be related to a wider bug currently under investigation, as noted by Microsoft in similar cases.

May I ask whether you’re using an iPhone or Android device and which OS version you’re currently running? This will help narrow down the most effective fix.

Feel free to share your device details or any changes you recently applied I'm here to guide you through the next steps and help restore your widget functionality.

    Best Regards,

    Noel

It seems that you are experiencing issues with your Outlook widget not displaying your calendar events as it used to. Here are a few suggestions that may help you resolve this issue:

    1. Check for Updates: Ensure that both your Outlook app and your device's operating system are up to date. Sometimes, updates can fix bugs that affect functionality.
    2. Reboot Your Device: Restarting your device can sometimes resolve temporary glitches that may be causing the widget to malfunction.
    3. Re-add the Widget: Try removing the Outlook widget from your home screen and then re-adding it. This can refresh the widget's connection to the app.
    4. Check Widget Settings: Make sure that the widget settings are configured correctly to display your calendar. Sometimes settings can change after updates.
    5. Clear App Cache: If you are using Android, clearing the cache of the Outlook app might help. Go to your device settings, find the Outlook app, and clear its cache.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, it may be worth checking forums or support pages for any ongoing issues with the Outlook widget, as there may be a broader problem affecting users.
