Plug charger directly into wall (not power strip)

Make sure the LED on Surface charger is ON. If LED is OFF: → Charger is bad.

If LED is ON but no charging: → Internal charging circuit issue

If the battery icon is covering most of the screen, it usually means:

Battery is completely drained, Charger not detected

Or device stuck in boot screen

Press and hold Power button for 20–30 seconds continuously

Keep holding even if screen flickers.

    Release after 30 seconds.

    Wait 10 seconds.

    Then press Power again normally.

    Does it start?

    Press and hold Power button

At the same time press and hold Volume Up button

Keep holding both for 15 seconds

    Release

    Wait 10 seconds

    Press Power to start.

If your Surface device is showing a large battery icon on the screen and is not charging or turning off, it may indicate a battery issue. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the problem:

    1. Check the Power Supply: Ensure that the power supply is connected properly to both the device and the wall outlet. Try using a different outlet or power supply if available.
    2. Allow the Battery to Charge: Connect your Surface to the power supply and allow it to charge for at least 30 minutes. Check if the battery icon changes or if the device powers on.
    3. Run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit (SDT): If the device powers on, connect a USB drive with the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit loaded. Launch the SDT from the Windows Desktop and run all diagnostics to check for issues with the battery.
    4. Battery Authentication: If the battery is still not charging, you may need to run the Battery Repair (Validation) tool within the SDT. This requires a stable internet connection and the latest version of the Surface Management Extension. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the authentication process.
    5. Contact Support: If the problem persists, it may be necessary to reach out to Microsoft Support for further assistance.

These steps should help you identify and potentially resolve the charging issue with your Surface device.
