Hello Dan Mitzel,
Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A community.
I understand that you're in need of a BitLocker recovery key for your Surface and you’re not sure where to find it. Before getting further, I'd like to reconfirm with you whether this is a personal device, or actually a work‑managed device?
The key is often stored with the very first Microsoft account used to set up the computer. If this is yours alone, there are only a few places where the key can exist:
- Visiting the official Microsoft recovery key page:
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account used on the Surface Laptop.
- Try every possible account you or others may have used on the device (personal, secondary personal, work/school, etc.)
- Check your OneDrive folders for any files named
BitLockeror similar. - For work or school devices, you should also check with your organization's IT department. Sometimes the key is saved in their database.
However, in the unfortunate case that you can't find the key at all, or it was never backed up, it is impossible for anyone to send you another (even Microsoft). The only way to use the laptop again is to reinstall Windows, which will unfortunately erase everything on the drive.
I hope the information above helps clear up this situation for you, and you can find the BitLocker key you needed!
