Black dot in bottom right of screen. Taking a long time to download updates - at 1% for about 20 mins.

    Hi @Olivia Jones,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Congratulations on your new Surface Laptop 13. I understand that seeing a black circle on the screen and experiencing slow updates can be concerning for a brand-new device, but these behaviors are often part of the initial setup process.

    Regarding your concerns:

    • The black circle, this is typically a system icon indicating that the device is rebuilding its drive cache. This is a software-level process to ensure your storage is optimized and usually resolves itself within a few minutes.
    • Updates stuck at 1%, during the first setup, Surface devices often download large firmware packages. It is very common for the progress bar to appear "stuck" at 1% for 30 to 60 minutes while it verifies these files in the background.

    Recommended steps

    1. Wait it Out: Please keep the laptop connected to its power charger and allow it at least one hour to finish the background processes.
    2. Force Restart: If the screen remains stuck after an hour, you can "reset" the process by holding the Power button down for a full 20 seconds until the Microsoft logo reappears.

If the black circle remains visible on all screens or the updates continue to fail after a restart, we want to ensure you have a perfect device for the long term.

We highly encourage you to bring the device back to where you purchased it or visit the nearest authorized Surface service center. A support agent can perform an in-depth diagnostic check to verify the hardware and ensure everything is working exactly as it should.

Hopefully this information proves valuable, and I wish you an enjoyable time with your new device.
