My new Surface laptop keeps disappearing from my list of registered devices - how can I fix that?

I recently bought a Surface Laptop 7. I installed and successfully registered it as a device linked to my Microsoft. However, within a few hours I noticed that the touchscreen was faulty and returned it to Microsoft to be repaired. The laptop was repaired and returned to me, still carrying the same serial number, but requiring a completely new install as if it was new out of the box.
Next I once again registered the device to my Microsoft account. The registration process was smooth, Microsoft recognised my serial number and the device showed both on the laptop and online as linked to my account. HOWEVER, the next time I logged into the web page for my Microsoft account, the laptop had disappeared as a registered device. I have registered the device several times since, the process always seems to work, the device shows as registered on the account website, but every single time at the next log-in to my account, my Surface 7 has disappeared. How can I fix this?

    Tim,

I encountered issues myself with the Devices page. I opened 4 separate tickets. It took them a month to fix it. This issue was impacting customers much earlier than mid-November.

Hi Jess, The proposed fixes did not work. However, after being passed around between four different Microsoft support agents in both the Surface and the Accounts teams, I was given a reason why there's a problem and why it can't be fixed right now. Apparently, "our [Microsoft] engineers are currently working on an update to upgrade our Microsoft account's devices page and that is why some or all functionalities of it are currently disabled."

This work has been going on since mid-November; once the update has been installed at the backend, the linked device settings will sync again. There is no eta for the completion of this work, although I was told it might "hopefully" be end of this month. "At the moment, the only option is to wait for the engineering team to finish the update" according to the support person.

Apparently, my device does indeed show as registered correctly on Microsoft's systems, but the accounts page doesn't pick that up because of the backend work.

    Hi @Tim Weber

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Regarding your issue, when Windows is not fully linked to the Microsoft account at the operating‑system level or when certain device‑sync settings are off the Devices page may show the Surface temporarily and then remove it during the next backend sync.

Here are a few steps you can try:

    1. Verify Microsoft Account Sign-in
    • Go to Settings > Accounts > Your info.
    • Ensure it says, "Microsoft Account" under your name and not "Local Account."
    1. Rename the device

Changing the name of your PC often forces a fresh sync to the Microsoft servers.

    • Go to Settings > System > About
    • Select Rename this PC
    • Enter a simple name (for example: Surface_PC2026)
    • Restart the computer
    • After restarting, wait about 15–30 minutes and then check the Microsoft Devices website again.
    1. Turn on Find my device + Location
    • Go to Settings > Privacy & security (or Privacy for older Windows versions).
    • Select Location.
    • Ensure "Location services" is On.
    • Ensure "Let apps access your location" is On.
    • Go back to Privacy & security and select Find my device.
    • Ensure the "Find my device" setting is On.
    1. Refresh the online device list
    • Go to https://account.microsoft.com/devices and sign in with the same Microsoft account.
    • If you see multiple similar Surface entries (or older/unknown ones), remove the duplicates.
    • Then sign into the Surface again and re-check the Devices page after a little time.
    • If it still says no devices, click “Add device (Register device)” and follow the prompts.
    • Open Microsoft Store > profile icon > Sign out > Sign in (same account) to force a sync.

For more details, please refer to: Manage devices used with your Microsoft account

Hopefully it will help work with your issue and if you have any other questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask.
