Sign-in Option message says "We couldn't find a camera compatible with Windows Hello Face"

1 week ago bought a brand new MS Surface laptop. But cannot setup the Windows Hello Facial recognition sign-in option, only can do the Hello fingerprint.

The Facial recognition setting literally says "we couldn't find a camera compatible with Windows Hello Face". Why would a MS laptop NOT have the inbuilt camera that is compatible with Hello Face? I know the camera works, have used it for Teams calls. Is there a setting or system config I have to do for facial recognition to work?

    Hi M Angeloni,

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!

Windows Hello Face requires a special IR camera, while the camera that works for Teams calls is the RGB camera. Your Surface Laptop should have this built-in, but if the driver isn’t installed or the camera is disabled, the IR sensor might not be detected. Here's what to check:

    1 - Basic checks:

    • Confirm if your Surface supports Windows Hello Face:
      • Surface Laptop Go or certain models don't support this feature.
      • You can read the manual or search online for your model.
      • Or share the model here so I can help look into it.
    • Run troubleshooter:
      • Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot
      • Additional troubleshooters > Camera > Run
    • Check your account permission:
      • Sometimes organizational settings can interfere with Windows Hello
      • Open Settings > Accounts > check Access work or school section.
      • Also check Email & accounts > Remove any unused accounts.

2 - Re-enable the IR camera (if available)

    • Press Win + X > Device Manager > View (top menu) > Check Show hidden devices
    • Expand Cameras or Biometric Devices section > Look for entries (or similar):
      • Infrared Camera
      • Surface IR Camera Front
      • Intel(R) Imaging Signal Processor
      • Windows Hello Face Authentication Camera
    • If you see a grayed-out camera, right-click it > Enable device
    • If you see a yellow warning icon, right-click it > Update driver
    • Let it search automatically > if found or fixed, restart your PC.

    3 - Manually update drivers

It'd be helpful if you can share your exact Surface Laptop model. I can then tell you if it supports Windows Hello Face and share the exact driver link for your device. If it's corrupted, you may even request repair or replacement as the laptop is newly bought and still under warranty.
