We have a device which is a home edition, and the user was attempting to upgrade to Windows 11 Pro. The device has been set up with work M365 apps, but when attempting to upgrade via Store, it would not accept the work email. The device is not a domain, entra joined or registered as well and not managed by Intune.

Secondly, some devices are Intune managed but it do not accept work email in Store but accept personal email addresses and we can download apps

Does Microsoft Store accept work email sign-in?

    Hi Bosco Das,

To answer your question directly: the Microsoft Store does not support work/school (Entra ID) accounts for purchasing Windows upgrades, including the Home → Pro upgrade. Even if a device has M365 apps installed or is managed by Intune, the Store still requires a personal Microsoft Account (MSA) for buying licenses or upgrades. This is why your Home edition device refuses the work email but accepts personal ones.

For the Intune-managed devices, what you’re seeing is also expected. While Intune allows app deployment using work accounts, the Store itself still won’t authenticate a work email for purchases, only for app entitlement when pushed through Intune or the Company Portal. Anything involving a transaction, OS upgrade, or license purchase is handled exclusively through personal MSAs.

The cleanest route for upgrading Home → Pro is either entering a valid Pro product key under Settings > System > Activation, or purchasing the upgrade using a personal Microsoft account on the device. If you'd like, I can walk you through the correct upgrade path step by step based on your environment.

I hope this helps clarify the situation. If you find this answer useful, please hit “Accept Answer” so I know it resolved your concern 😊.

    Jason.

The Microsoft Store does not universally accept work email sign-ins for all functionalities. In your case, since the device is running Windows 10 or 11 Home and is not joined to a domain or registered with Microsoft Entra, it may not allow the use of work email for purchases or upgrades. The Store typically supports personal Microsoft accounts for app downloads and purchases, which could explain why personal email addresses are accepted while work emails are not.

For devices managed by Intune, the behavior can vary depending on the organization's policies and the specific configurations set by the IT administrators. If the devices are Intune managed but still do not accept work emails in the Store, it may be due to restrictions placed on the Store access for work accounts.

In summary, while the Microsoft Store does support work accounts in certain contexts, it is not guaranteed for all users or devices, especially if they are not properly configured or managed by an organization.
