Foundry Agent MS Learn Tutorial - Code Interpreter doesn't function

I apologize, I could not find the tag for Microsoft Foundry.

I'm following a MS Learn tutorial, and launched this exercise: https://microsoftlearning.github.io/mslearn-ai-agents/Instructions/01-agent-fundamentals.html

I completed the exercise successfully, except the part at the end where the agent should use Code Interpreter to generate a file. Code Interpreter has been added successfully on the agent, but when the prompt asks it to generate an expense file, it tries and fails to use code interpreter a few times and then the agent gives up saying "It appears a technical issue is preventing me from generating the file. If you prefer, I can provide the expense claim details for you to manually enter, or I can keep trying alternative methods to create the file for you. Let me know how you'd like to proceed!"

I can see in the thread logs the code interpreter is generating no output each time it tries.

I cannot figure out why code interpreter does not work.

What information do you need from me? Or what else can I try?

Please confirm if you are using below supported regions and file types

Canada central

Central US

Japan east

South central US

Southeast Asia

Spain central

Please share your model's name, deployment type and version to replicate the issue.

Hi John Dees,

You need to provide a sample file to the Code Interpreter and then try again, as shown below.

This will allow it to generate the file you want. I’ve tried it on my end, and it worked fine for me, as shown below.

For better understanding, try creating a new agent and adding a similar file that you’d like to generate. Also, keep in mind that Foundry gets updated frequently, so sometimes the course doesn’t fully match the latest updates.

The region is southcentralus.

I tried the suggestion of adding a sample file, but it did not work. It still has the same issue where the code interpreter cannot operate.

I am experiencing the exact same issue (also in south central US).

I can confirm that it does work in another tenant which is in another region

I just tested the instructions in South Central US region; it is able to generate response at my side.

Have tested both in Visual Studio and Org subscription.

There might be transient issue at South Central US side.

Please test in other available regions and let me know. Also, share the prompt/file if they are different than the ones in MS learn tutorial.
