Teams calls do not work giving the “We couldn’t connect the call” error message

Yesterday I installed Teams on my friend’s iPad. Then my friend logged in. The login was through a verification code sent by email (not a password).

The problem is that when I try to call my friend from my iPhone I get the message: we couldn’t connect the call, the call to nameofmyfriend didn’t go through. My wife calling the same friend gets the same error message.

Now the interesting part. When I call the friend from my iPad everything works fine. Moreover, when the friend calls me I can receive the calls either on my iPhone or on my iPad.

Any idea what is going on? Thank you.

    Hello,

I returned from my trip and followed your suggestions. My friend already had the microsoft account, as you likely know, but password was not enabled as an option to log in. After some 15-20 minutes of trying to follow the classically confusing microsoft logic I managed to add the password as a login option. Then I logged her out from teams and logged her back in using the password. Then I tried to call her from my iPhone again. I got the same error message as before. So I tried to call her from my iPad, something that worked before. Well, now it stopped working showing the same error messages as my iPhone. In other words we got from bad to worse. Restarting the apps on all the devices made no difference.

What a failure of a company…. And I do not remember things being ever different with it. And how do they expect non-technical people to go through a fiasco like this one?

I will try to remove and re-add myself as a contact now.

Any suggestion of what to try with this wonder of software would be appreciated.

    Hi,

What’s probably going on is that your friend’s login with just a verification code created what Microsoft calls a "lightweight" Teams account, which works fine for chat but sometimes causes hiccups with voice calls, especially across devices. Your iPad likely still has some cached data or an older token that lets it connect just fine, while your iPhone is trying to reach your friend through a newer Teams authentication route that expects a fully verified account. Once your friend eventually sets up a full Microsoft account, I suspect everything will sync up perfectly. For now, the fact that calls work iPad-to-iPad tells us the setup itself is okay, just not fully recognized across devices.

    Kind regards,

    Hi,

It sounds like Teams calls aren’t connecting because your friend logged in using only a verification code instead of a full Microsoft account password, which can cause incomplete setup for calling features. To fix it, have your friend sign out of Teams on the iPad and sign back in using their full Microsoft email and password. If they don’t have a password yet, they can set one through the "Forgot password' option. Then, on your iPhone, sign out of Teams, restart the app, and sign back in to refresh connection data. Also, check under Settings > Teams that Microphone, Camera, and Local Network permissions are enabled, and temporarily disable VPN or private DNS if you use one. Finally, if it still fails, try removing and re-adding each other as contacts to refresh the Teams calling directory.

    Kind regards,
