  1. Corrupted Installation Files – If some Microsoft 365 program files are damaged or missing, the apps may fail to launch properly.
  2. Add-ins Conflict – Faulty or outdated add-ins can prevent Word, Excel, or PowerPoint from opening.

Hi there! When your Microsoft 365 apps suddenly stop opening, it's usually because something is a little corrupted or a recent update didn't go quite right. The good news is, there's a clear process to fix it, and you can usually do it yourself.

Start with the easiest and most effective fix first.

    First, a Digital Tune-Up
The most common culprit is a corrupted file. Fortunately, you don't need to uninstall and reinstall everything. Microsoft has a built-in repair tool that can fix any broken files by replacing them.

    On Windows:

Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
Find your Microsoft 365 or Office in the list.
Click the three dots or right-click and select Modify.
Choose the Online Repair option. This is more thorough than the Quick Repair.

    On Mac:

Just make sure all your Office apps are up to date. Open any one of them and go to Help > Check for Updates. Installing the latest patches often fixes these kinds of glitches.

If That Doesn't Work, Check for a Rogue Add-in.

If the repair doesn't solve it, the next likely culprit is a conflicting add-in. These are small programs that load when the app starts, and a buggy one can make the whole thing crash. You can test this by opening the app in Safe Mode, which bypasses all add-ins.

    To open in Safe Mode:

Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
Type the command for the app: winword.exe /safe (Word), excel.exe /safe (Excel), or powerpnt.exe /safe (PowerPoint).

    To disable them:

Inside the Safe Mode app, go to File > Options > Add-ins.
At the bottom of the window, next to "Manage," choose COM Add-ins and click Go.
Uncheck everything in the list, click OK, and close the app.
Now, try opening the app normally. It should work. If you need a specific add-in, you can go back and re-enable them one by one to find the one that was causing the trouble.

This two-step process usually gets to the bottom of the issue. Let me know if you have any questions or if you run into any trouble!

    Is that a Q or a statement?

Restart the PC, once fully loaded, repair Office,> Apps & Features>Select Office your version>Modify /Repair, once the repair completes re-test (Quick repair)

O365/Office when installed under a Win user admin account, and run from that admin account, auto logs in when the PC is started. There is no separate login for any component.

Win search for Word > Resulting shortcut > Rt click > Pin to task bar > start Word from that shortcut (hover mouse over the shortcut gives access to the 10 most recent docs)

    Same for other core components.

Start eg Word open an old doc via recents/search

Rarely any need to access OneDrive itself.
